Chrissy Roth-Francis, Director

Chrissy is a Bay Area native and is thrilled to be working at Cal. As a journalism major at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Chrissy was highly involved in the orientation program as well as the campus newspaper. She received her master's degree from New York University in Higher Education, and recently graduated from the University of Southern California with her doctorate in Educational Leadership. Chrissy is an active member in the Association for Orientation, Transition and Retention in Higher Education (NODA). In her free time, Chrissy enjoys traveling, hiking, and rooting on the San Francisco Giants.

 

Emily KrechelEmily Krechel, Associate Director

Emily grew up in Virginia and went to James Madison University for her BA is Sociology. She was involved in Madison Equality (LGBTQA organization), became an orientation leader, and studied abroad in London. Then she attended Miami University (in Ohio) and received her MS in Student Affairs in Higher Education. She's worked in orientations and residential life at many colleges including: James Madison, SUNY Purchase, Miami University (in Ohio!), Virginia Commonwealth, and most recently, Earlham College. She joined the NSS team in January 2012. Outside of work Emily enjoys playing rugby, bouldering, hiking and camping, cycling, and snowboarding.

 

Micki EstuestaMicki Estuesta, Assistant Director

Micki grew up in Oregon and studied mathematics at the University of Oregon. As a student, she was involved in orientation, sorority life and leadership programs. Micki traveled as a leadership consultant following graduation. After traveling, Micki completed her MEd in Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs from the University of Southern California where she worked in fraternity and sorority life, judicial affairs and student support systems. She most recently worked at Sonoma State University with student organizations and joined the NSS team in 2015. In her free time Micki bakes, reads and spends time with her black lab Opi (short for Optimus Prime).

 

Evan Razor, Program Coordinator

Evan grew up in the central valley of California and studied business administration at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He was highly involved with their orientation programs throughout both his undergraduate and graduate work. Evan also served as an AmeriCorps VIP and went on to complete his MA in Counseling and Guidance in Higher Education at Cal Poly. Before joining the NSS team in August 2016, he was working in Fraternity and Sorority Life (not surprisingly, at Cal Poly). In his free time, Evan enjoys spending time with his dog, swimming, running, and exploring new coffee shops. 

 

Jerome Andres, Student Coordinator

Jerome is a third year studying Psychology, with plans of attending medical school and becoming an orthopedic surgeon in the future. He was born in the Laguna Province in the Philippines, but immigrated to the United States at the age of eight and has been living in San Luis Obispo county ever since. Jerome was a CalSO leader in 2016 and is one of six GBO student coordinator this year. Aside from orientation, Jerome works in Residence Life as a Resident Assistant and is a brother of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, serving on the executive board as Vice President of Communications. In his spare time, he writes and performs stand-up comedy, trains in boxing, and pretends to freestyle rap.

 

Sofia Gonzalez Platas, Student Coordinator

Born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico (international students, yea!) Sofia moved to the U.S. to pursue her undergraduate studies. At UC Berkeley she is now a fourth-year double majoring in Political Economy and International Development Studies. Sofia was a CalSO leader during summer 2016 and is now a Student Coordinator for Golden Bear Orientation 2017. Outside of work, she loves eating super nachos from La Burrita, watching The Office and learning French. 

 

Tanisha Muquit, Student Coordinator

Tanisha is a 4th year majoring in Microbial Biology from Union City, California but originally from Dhaka, Bangladesh. She was a CalSO Leader in 2015, a CalSO Student Reservations Clerk in 2016, and is now a GBO Student Coordinator. Tanisha is passionate about Cal spirit and traditions. As a member of the University of California Rally Committee, she loves to wave the Cal flags, help with the card stunt, and drop random Cal facts (Go Bears!!). She's also a member of the Senior Gift Committee to help fund programs that shape student experiences. In the future, Tanisha would like to continue working with students and hopes to pursue a degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs.     

 

Michaela Sanchez, Student Coordinator

Michaela is a 3rd year studying integrative biology with hopes to pursue a career in the medical field someday. She was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California. She was a CalSO leader in summer 2015 and summer 2016.  She also served as a CalSO Reservations Clerk in summer 2016. Aside from being involved with New Student Services, she is also involved in many other organizations on campus. She lived in the Women in Science & Engineering (WiSE) Themed Housing Program during her first year, she is a member of Kappa Gamma Delta, a premedical sorority, she has volunteered teaching health class in Bay Area high schools for the past 2 years, she is a member of the UC Berkeley chapter of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, and she is doing research in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. In her free time, she enjoys running, reading, making spreadsheets, putting her EMT skills to work by volunteering at Cal sporting events, singing, sleeping, going to the beach, petting fuzzy animals, and watching movies.

 

Keita Yada, Student Coordinator

Keita is a transfer student going into his senior year, studying Psychology and minoring in Disability Studies at UC Berkeley. He grew up in Van Nuys, CA (in the Valley, just outside of LA) and hopes to pursue a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy. He was a CalSO Leader in summer 2016 and is currently serving as one of the six GBO Student Coordinators. Aside from being involved in orientation, Keita is involved in doing research at a Language and Cognitive Development lab, volunteers at the local hospital as well as the University's health clinic under their Rehabilitation Services department. He also acts as a coordinator in a student educational services organization that serves elementary schools in Oakland to act as mentors and tutors. During his free time, Keita also takes up dance and kendo (Japanese sword-fighting martial arts) as a way to break away from his academics and administrative work. Keita cares deeply about the transition and development that comes from orientation and is looking forward to the new week-long program that he and the rest of the Leadership team have been working on!

 

Joyce Yang, Student Coordinator

Born in Taiwan but raised in Southern California, Joyce is a senior studying Media Studies and Education at Cal. After working as a Cal Student Orientation leader during the summer of 2015, she fell in love with new student orientation and is ecstatic to be working with the rest of the NSS team on developing and implementing GBO 2017. Joyce is an aspiring high school teacher and hopes to work abroad after graduation. On campus, she is a part of several mentorship organizations and is also involved in Greek life. In her free time, Joyce enjoys traveling, trying new foods, and playing the cello.
